Limescale, Cloudy Plastic and the Film You Cannot Wash Off

After a few months in a hard-water area, blender cups develop a dull white haze that no amount of scrubbing removes. People assume the plastic has worn out and buy a replacement, which then goes the same way. Most of the time it is mineral deposit, it is reversible, and knowing which kind of cloudiness you have saves you the money.

Three different kinds of cloudy

Mineral film is a chalky white haze that feels slightly rough and comes off with acid. Detergent etching from a dishwasher is a permanent, even dullness across the whole surface. Crazing is a network of fine cracks in the plastic, usually from heat or from harsh cleaners, and it means the part should be replaced. Run a fingernail across the surface and you can usually tell within a second.

The acid soak that fixes the first kind

Fill the cup with a mixture of white vinegar and warm water, leave it for an hour or overnight if the deposit is heavy, then wash normally. Citric acid powder works faster and smells of nothing. Do not run the machine with vinegar in it; there is no need, and the seal and coupling gain nothing from an acid bath. Cup-based machines like those at KOIOS respond to this treatment well, since the parts come apart completely.

Why hard water leaves more behind than you expect

Dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution when water evaporates or warms, and both happen in a blender. A cup left to air dry with a film of water in it deposits its minerals on the wall every single time. Drying with a cloth removes most of the problem before it starts.

Juicer mesh needs particular attention

A centrifugal juicer’s filter is a fine metal screen, and a combination of scale and dried pulp closes it up until the juice yield drops noticeably. Brush it from the outside in, under running water, immediately after use, and soak it in acid periodically. Whilst you have it out, check the mesh for splits or a distorted rim, because a damaged basket at speed is genuinely dangerous.

Do not use these

Scouring pads, wire wool and abrasive cream all scratch plastic, and the scratches then hold deposit and smell far worse than the original haze. Bleach clouds copolyester over time. Very hot water hardens some deposits and softens the plastic; warm is enough for everything here.

The parts that scale up first

Deposit builds where water sits longest, which is not where you tend to look.

  • The lid gasket groove, where a trapped drop dries between uses.
  • The screw threads at the top of the cup.
  • Around the blade hub, mixed with fat residue into a stubborn grey film.
  • Measuring marks moulded into the wall, which trap deposit in the grooves.
  • Juicer filter baskets, where scale blocks the mesh and cuts the yield.

The dishwasher makes it worse

Dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline and, combined with heat, it etches clear plastics permanently. If your cups came out of the machine dull after a few cycles, that damage is not coming back. Hand washing takes a minute and is the difference between a cup that lasts five years and one that lasts one.

Prevention, in three habits

Rinse immediately, dry properly rather than leaving parts to drip, and store them open. In a hard-water area, add a vinegar soak once a month and keep a filter jug for the water you actually blend with. That is the whole maintenance routine, and it costs less than a single replacement cup.
