Organising systems fail when the person who built them is not the one putting things away, and labels are the entire solution to that.
Why They Matter More Than the Containers
You know where things go because you decided. Nobody else in the household does, and neither will you in six months.
Without labels, other people put things in the nearest container, which is how a system degrades within weeks. With labels, the decision is made for them.
It is also what stops you buying a second bag of rice because the first is behind something.
What Makes a Good Label
- Readable from where you stand, not from six inches away
- On the front face, not the top, unless you look down at it
- Naming a category rather than a specific item
- Broad enough that things still fit next month
- Removable, since categories change

Name Categories, Not Contents
The mistake that makes labels useless within a month.
Baking is a category. Self-raising flour is an item, and when it runs out the label is wrong. Snacks survives a change of snacks; crisps does not.
Broad categories mean the label stays true and things have somewhere to go.
Label the Shelf, Not Only the Box
The version that makes things go back in the right place.
A labelled box tells you what is inside. A labelled shelf edge tells you where the box belongs, which is the half that gets forgotten.
What Not to Lose
When decanting food out of packaging, the best-before date, cooking instructions, allergen information and batch code all disappear.
Cutting out the panel and taping it inside a cupboard door takes seconds, and it matters if there is ever a recall or an allergy in the household.
Removable Beats Permanent
Categories change, containers get reused, and a permanent label on a bin makes it single-purpose forever.
Chalk labels, clip-on tags and removable vinyl all work. Permanent marker on plastic does not come off.
Handwriting Is Fine
A system that is not labelled because you are waiting for a label maker is not labelled.
